Violin Tuner

Troubleshooting

Violin Tuner Microphone Not Working?

Fix blocked microphone access on iPhone Safari and Android Chrome, recover after interruptions, and check why the tuner has no reading.

Start with the message on screen

Open the violin tuner directly in Safari or Chrome, rather than inside a social or messaging app. Tap Start Tuning and allow microphone access when asked. Keep the page visible while playing.

If you see “Microphone access is blocked”, check permissions below. If the tuner is listening but has no pitch reading, go to the sound checks. You can play the reference tones without granting microphone access; hearing those tones does not confirm that microphone input works.

iPhone or iPad: allow the microphone in Safari

  1. Open violin-tuner.com in Safari. Open the Page Menu beside the address bar, then Website Settings or More, depending on your version.
  2. Find Microphone and choose Allow for this website, or Ask to receive a prompt again.
  3. If access is still denied, check Settings → Apps → Safari → Microphone. On older versions, Safari is directly under Settings. Choose Ask rather than Deny.
  4. Return to the tuner, reload it, tap Start Tuning and accept the prompt if shown.

Menu names vary with your system version. See Apple’s Safari website-permission instructions. You do not need to allow microphone access for every website.

Android: check Chrome and system permissions

  1. In Chrome, open the menu → Settings → Site settings → Microphone. Enable requests and check whether violin-tuner.com is blocked; change its permission to allow access.
  2. In Android Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Microphone, allow access while using the app. If your phone has a system-wide microphone access switch, check that it is on too.
  3. Return to the tuner, reload and tap Start Tuning. Allow the website’s request.

A work or school device may have permissions managed by its administrator. See Google’s Chrome microphone help for version-specific options.

Access is allowed, but there is no reading

Play one open string at a time in a quiet room. Move a little closer to the microphone; if the sound is very loud or distorted, move back. Try the built-in microphone by disconnecting a headset. Close calls or other apps using audio, then stop and restart tuning.

This tool targets G3, D4, A4 and E5. Speech, chords and notes far from those targets may produce no accepted reading. If the note is detected but keeps moving, follow the jumping-readings checklist. Do not tighten a string just because the display is blank.

After a call, screen lock or switching apps

The tuner stops microphone capture when the page is hidden. Return to the page and tap Start Tuning again. If it cannot restart after an interruption, reload the page and retry. Playing a reference tone also stops microphone capture.

When you finish, tap Stop Tuning. Old pitch readings should clear when the sound stops, while completed-string check marks can remain. In Auto mode the current note should switch when you play another string; a retained check mark is not a locked target.

Use the feedback page to prepare a report with your device, browser, exact error and the steps you tried. Note whether permission was granted and whether any pitch appeared. No recording is required. Microphone audio is processed in your browser, as explained in our privacy policy.
