How This Violin Tuner Works

The tuner listens to your microphone and compares the note with the selected string. A reading appears when the sound is clear enough to measure. Your audio stays on your device.

440 Hz vs 442 Hz Violin Tuning

Use 440 Hz unless your ensemble asks for another reference. Choose 442 Hz or a custom value in Settings; every string target updates immediately. See the 440 Hz and 442 Hz comparison for the pitch difference and all four targets.

Why Does My Violin Tuner Keep Jumping?

Play one string in a quiet room, with a steady bow and no vibrato. Mute adjacent strings. If detection is uncertain, the reading pauses until the sound is clearer. Follow the jumping-readings checklist to work through the symptoms.

Fine Tuners vs Pegs

Fine tuners are best for small changes. Turn gently and recheck the pitch. Pegs change tension more quickly; ask a teacher for help if you are new to them. Never force a stuck peg.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tune a violin?

Tap Start Tuning, allow the microphone and play an open string. Flat means the pitch needs to go up; sharp means it needs to go down. Make a small adjustment, play again and repeat for each string.

What notes are the four violin strings?

G3, D4, A4 and E5, from lowest to highest. Play each string without pressing it down with a finger.

What frequency should violin strings be?

With A4 at 440 Hz, the equal-tempered targets are G3 196.00 Hz, D4 293.66 Hz, A4 440.00 Hz and E5 659.26 Hz. The displayed targets change when you adjust the reference in Settings.

Should violin A be 440 Hz or 442 Hz?

Start with 440 Hz unless your teacher or ensemble asks for 442 Hz or another reference. You can change it in Settings.

Why does the tuner show the wrong note?

Mute the other strings and try selecting G, D, A or E yourself. Overtones and nearby instruments can confuse the reading. If the string is far out of tune, ask a teacher to help you bring it close to the target.

Why does the tuner keep jumping?

Try a slow, steady bow without vibrato. Mute the other strings and move closer to the microphone. An uneven note or background noise can make the reading jump.

Why is my violin always sharp?

Check the A4 reference in Settings, then play an open string. If it still reads sharp, lower the pitch a little and check again. Finger pressure can raise the pitch of a stopped note, so keep your fingers off the string while tuning.

Why does my violin go out of tune?

New strings stretch, and changes in temperature or humidity can affect tuning. Check the strings before you play. A peg that keeps slipping needs attention from a teacher or luthier.

Should I use fine tuners or pegs?

Use fine tuners for small changes. Pegs make larger changes; have a teacher show you how to use them, especially if a peg feels stuck.

Can beginners tune a violin themselves?

Start with the fine tuners and small adjustments. Ask a teacher to show you how to use the pegs and check the bridge before doing it on your own.

Can I tune a violin by ear?

Yes. Experienced players match a reference A and listen to the fifths between strings. This tuner uses equal-tempered targets; tuning perfect fifths by ear produces slightly different G, D and E frequencies.

Does microphone quality affect tuning?

Try your device’s built-in microphone in a quiet room. Move closer if the signal is weak, but leave some distance if loud notes distort. Bluetooth microphone processing can also affect the signal.

Does this work on iPhone?

Open the site in Safari, tap Start Tuning and allow the microphone. Keep the page open while tuning. If permission is blocked, follow the instructions shown below the meter.

Is my microphone audio uploaded?

Microphone audio is processed locally in your browser. It is not recorded or uploaded. Tap Stop Tuning to turn off the microphone.
